Placenta Encapsulation

With the recent launch of my Reclaim You, Postpartum program, I have been engulfed in all things postpartum healing.  Over the next couple of posts I will be sharing the most common questions I receive from about postpartum.

The biggest one recently has been about placenta encapsulation. Placenta encapsulation is not a new concept, by any means. Did you know a good majority of mammals consume their placenta after giving birth? Well, it’s true! The placenta is rich with progesterone, estrogen, vitamins and minerals like B12, iron, and B6. Although the animals might not know this information, I am sure they feel the difference!

Keep in mind the majority of information regarding the efficacy of placenta consumption is anecdotal. Unfortunately, there are no large research studies that exist to provide accurate, unbiased information. Due to the limited research, the CDC warns against placenta encapsulation because there are no documented known risks. Benefits that have been noted include a decrease in postpartum mood disorders, improved iron levels, increased energy, and a decrease in stress hormones.

The decision to encapsulate your placenta is yours alone. I would recommend evaluating your potential risks vs benefits and make the best decision for you.

Once you find a doula, midwife, or trained professional to encapsulate your placenta, it’s as easy as taking a vitamin. It is often recommended to take 1 capsule, 2 times a day for the first 2-3 weeks; thereafter, 1 capsule daily. And be sure to store your pills in the refrigerator.

Now you might be thinking this doesn’t sound like something you want to do but you would like to reclaim your health, postpartum. First, check out my Reclaim You, Postpartum program. Second, consider eating organ meats, like liver or heart.

A great way to eat organ meets is with the freeze method.
1. Be sure to find a high quality source of your organ meats
2. You can freeze your raw organ partially so it is easier to chop
3. Once partially frozen, chop the organ into very small bite size pieces, small enough to swallow
4. A great trick would be to spread them out on parchment paper and place them in the freezer for 10 minutes
5. After you did a flash freeze, which will help them from sticking together, you can put them in an airtight container to store in the freezer
6. You can take anywhere from 1 to 2 pieces daily.
